The beginning of the school year is one of the most important moments in a student’s educational journey. During the first days and weeks, students develop their first impressions of the learning environment, their teachers, their peers and their future possibilities.
For vocational education and training (VET), this period is particularly important. Many students are entering a new environment, meeting new people and starting a pathway that may directly influence their future career. A positive start can strengthen motivation, increase confidence and help students feel that they belong to the school community.
The first weeks are also an opportunity to demonstrate what vocational education is all about. Through practical activities, introductions to different vocational fields and interaction with teachers and working life representatives, students can begin to see the relevance of their studies and the opportunities available to them.
A welcoming school culture plays a key role. Students who feel supported and included are more likely to engage in learning, participate in school activities and develop a positive attitude towards their studies. Creating this sense of belonging should be a shared responsibility of teachers, support staff, student tutors and the wider school community.

Parents and guardians often play an important role in supporting educational choices and student wellbeing. Open communication and opportunities for dialogue help strengthen trust and cooperation.
Within the VET2Sustain project, we see the beginning of the school year as more than a routine event. It is an opportunity to strengthen inclusion, wellbeing and the attractiveness of vocational education. Small actions during the first weeks can have a lasting impact on students’ experiences and future success.
When students feel welcome from day one, they are more likely to believe that they have chosen the right path.
